Meet Christine Utomo

"I want the audience to sit and feel the love, fear, anxiety, tension, longing, triumph, faith, and heavenly calm within the music." — Christine Utomo (吴依婷)
Praised by China's Weibo Weekly Music Broadcast as a pianist who "lets Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto be reborn in her hands," Dr. Christine Utomo (吴依婷) is an Indonesian pianist, educator, and Piano Faculty (Foreign Expert) at the College of Chinese & ASEAN Arts, Chengdu University, and Artistic Director of Irama Music Studio, Indonesia — a music academy she has led since 2007. She brings to her work a rare combination of international performance experience and deep pedagogical commitment.
As a concerto soloist, Dr. Utomo has performed with the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Jakarta Sinfonietta Orchestra, Singapore's NAFA Wind Ensemble, Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra, and Torun Symphony Radio Orchestra. Her concert appearances span venues in the United States, Europe, China, and Southeast Asia, including Shanghai Cadillac Concert Hall, Aula Simfonia Jakarta, Fort Revelin Hall and Rector's Palace in Dubrovnik, Ratusz Hall in Torun, Teatro Comunale di Cassalmaggiore, Balai Sarbini Jakarta, Jakarta International Theatre, and the ASEAN Concert Hall at Chengdu University.
As a collaborative pianist, Dr. Utomo has performed alongside violinist Iskandar Widjaja in recitals across Indonesia and China, including a duo concert at the ASEAN Concert Hall, Chengdu in November 2024. She has also collaborated with cellist Bryant Gozali in a duo recital at Chengdu University in 2025, cellist Gabriel Schwabe, clarinetist Marcel Luxen, and pianist Wilson Chu, with whom she presented a two-piano recital celebrating Rachmaninoff's 150th anniversary at Steinway Hall Jakarta in 2023. In 2009, Dr. Utomo toured Sumatra Island with acclaimed cellist Tina Guo, performing across multiple cities. The tour culminated in the recording of two singles — Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango and Chopin's Introduction and Polonaise Brillante, Op. 3 — released on iTunes in 2010.
Her teaching spans students of all ages and levels — from early childhood music to advanced conservatoire preparation. She initiated the Early Childhood Music program at Irama Music Studio in 2013, drawing on Kodály and Edwin Gordon pedagogy, and became a licensed Kindermusik educator in 2014. Her students have won prizes at national and international competitions and have been accepted into universities in the United States, Europe, and China. She is a regular adjudicator at Indonesian piano competitions, including the Ananda Sukarlan Award, Steinway Piano Competition, and UPH National Piano Competition.
Beyond teaching and performing, Dr. Utomo is an active contributor to music education discourse. Her "Beethoven 250th Anniversary" online lecture series, organized during the pandemic, drew participants internationally and covered score analysis, interpretation, performance practice, and contemporary music. She has served as a regular guest lecturer for the late Dr. Johannes Nugroho's online piano pedagogy series and regularly organizes community concerts, masterclasses, and outreach programs.
Her current research interests include music education in cross-cultural contexts and contemporary piano music, with particular attention to the intersection of Southeast Asian and Chinese musical traditions.
Dr. Utomo completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the USC Thornton School of Music, where she also earned her Bachelor of Music (Cum Laude) and Master of Music degrees. She studied extensively with Norman Krieger, and has worked with Philippe Entremont, Angela Hewitt, Malcolm Bilson, Mikhail Voskressensky, Jacques Rouvier, and Arie Vardi, among others. She began piano study at the age of five under her mother, Ms. Lindawaty Angkasa, and later studied with Ms. Julinda, Mr. Andrew Wilkinson, and Ms. Jenny Sumono before pursuing her conservatoire training in the United States.
